Hike to the Cale di Terra Rossa |

If you are dreaming of crystal-clear water, picturesque forests and a breathtaking view of the island of Elba, then a short hike to the Cale di Terra Rossa is just the thing. And it is very close to Casa Ferruccio.

From the Casa to Puntone, turn left at the traffic circle, take the first road on the right and then straight on until you can’t go any further. There are several parking options there, including at Cala Felice, a wonderful lido, which I will write about later. And then the extensive forest and nature reserve of Bandite di Scarlino opens up.

From here, the hiking trails lead to the beautiful bays of Cala Martina and Cala Violina, mostly on shady paths with picturesque views across the Gulf of Follonica to Elba. However, today – on this sunny and warm day shortly after Easter – we turn off very early. We find our way through the wild forest to Cala dei Terra Rossa.

Crystal-clear water and idyllic tranquillity

The trees provide shade and the paths are well maintained. The fresh air and tranquillity of the forest provide a pleasant contrast to the sunny beach. You might even spot some of the native animal species that live here.

Block to Follonoca from the Cale di Terra Rossa

The Cale di Terra Rossa has incredibly clear water again today. That’s why I often go swimming and snorkeling here in the summer. The beach consists of clean gravel that feels pleasant underfoot and offers a welcome change from the typical sandy beach. There is also enough space to spread out my towel and enjoy the sun or read a good book. The best thing about it? The beach is often less crowded than other, better-known beaches in the region.

The breathtaking view of Elba

There are beautiful views of the island of Elba on the horizon from various points on the Cale di Terra Rossa. The view is a dream, especially at sunset, when the sky glows in warm tones and the sea laps against the coast in gentle waves. A perfect moment to pause and enjoy the beauty of nature.
