Welcome to San Gimignano

Tuscany in Italy is known for its breathtaking scenery, rich history and charming towns. One of these towns that has emerged as a real gem is San Gimignano. With its medieval architecture, picturesque alleyways and unmistakable townscape, San Gimignano attracts tourists from all over the world year after year.

A past steeped in history

Also known as “Medieval Manhattan”, the city is famous for its 14 preserved medieval towers, which once served as status symbols for wealthy families. The two highest towers, the “Torre Grossa” from 1311 and the “Torre della Rognosa”, are 54 and 51 meters high respectively.

Today, only some of these towers are still open to the public, but they offer breathtaking views over the Tuscan countryside. The town has largely retained its medieval structure, which transports visitors to another era and allows them to experience the charm of times gone by.

Art and culture

The city is also home to an impressive collection of works of art in its museums and churches. The Collegiata Basilica is an architectural masterpiece that houses works of art by famous artists such as Benozzo Gozzoli. The many art galleries also offer a variety of works by local artists, showcasing the rich creativity and heritage of the region.

Culinary delights

San Gimignano is not only known for its architecture and art, but also for its culinary delights. The town is famous for its Vernaccia wine, which has been cultivated here since the Middle Ages.

Visitors can sample local specialties in the numerous wine bars and restaurants, accompanied by a glass of the unique Vernaccia wine. The authentic Tuscan cuisine, from pici pasta to truffle dishes, makes gourmets’ hearts beat faster.

Inviting hospitality

The inhabitants of San Gimignano are proud of their town and warmly welcome visitors. Many of the small family businesses offer charming accommodation that reflects the rustic Tuscan style. The hospitality of the locals helps to make visitors feel at home in this small medieval town.

Sustainable tourism

San Gimignano has also taken steps to promote sustainable tourism.
