Gavorrano, an idyllic village in Tuscany, is located above our Casa Ferruccio and can be reached by car in five minutes or on foot in around 45 minutes. Gavorrano enchants with its historical flair and its views of the impressive landscape. Nestled in the rolling hills of the Maremma, Gavorrano is the perfect place for a short, relaxing getaway.
Historical treasures in Gavorrano
The history of Gavorrano dates back to the Middle Ages. You can still discover traces of these bygone times on a walk through the winding alleyways. The church of San Giuliano from the 13th century is particularly worth seeing. This majestic church towers over the town and offers a great view of the surrounding countryside.
Il Salto della Contessa – An unforgettable historical festival
A special highlight in Gavorrano is the historical festival “Il Salto della Contessa”, which takes place every year on the first Sunday after August 6. This festival focuses on the tragic story of Count Nello and Pia de’ Tolomei. A story of love and betrayal that is deeply rooted in the region. The spectacle begins with a colorful parade in which flag bearers in historical costumes enliven the streets. This is followed by an exciting horse race, a Palio, between the two contrade of the town, Tolomei and Pannocchieschi. Although it is smaller and less well-known than the famous Palio of Siena, this festival captivates both locals and tourists alike.
Parco Minerario – A short detour into the history of mining
Gavorrano also offers the opportunity to take a look at the town’s industrial past in the Parco Minerario. A short visit to this mining park will give you an insight into the history and hard work of the miners who once shaped life in Gavorrano.
Culinary delights in Gavorrano
After all the historical experiences, the numerous trattorias in the town spoil us with delicious Tuscan specialties.
Try the wild boar ragout or the local pasta pici, accompanied by a glass of regional wine – a real treat!
In my favorite bar Pinco Panco Caffetteria Enoteca , the coffee at the bar still costs one euro (as of August 2024 🙂
